Kicks Off 2012 with Big News for Employers
On January 10, 2012, the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee hosted a breakfast with a presentation from Rebecca O’Neil of Southwest Georgia Workforce 44. The topic of interest to employers was how to save their company $$$$ in training costs by using the OJT program available to them.![]()
National Red Ribbon Week Highlighted Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee Contributes
Many residents of Grady County are impacted by drug and alcohol abuse in some form. October 23-29, 2011 was set aside to host local events aimed at sharing resources for prevention, treatment and general awareness of substance abuse in Grady County. The Grady County Substance Abuse Awareness and Prevention Team was joined by the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee along with others to plan and prepare a week long list of activities to bring information to the citizens of Grady County. ![]()
National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 2011 was declared National Disability Employment Awareness Month and in recognition of this, The Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee, Cairo Career Center and Vocational Rehabilitation organized and participated in several events in Grady County.
USDOL Wage and Hour Seminar
A crowded room of employers listened carefully as Investigator Warren Williams from the U.S. Department of Labor spoke to them on Wage and Hour laws. Warren Williams of Moultrie, a 12-year veteran investigator with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division in Albany, conducted the seminar.
Safety Seminar
The Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee along with the Cairo Career Center, Georgia Department of Labor hosted a breakfast seminar on July 12, 2011 with presenter, Jimmy Mize with the Safety Engineering Division of the Georgia Department of Labor.
Farmer Appreciation Breakfast
Deep within a season of drought, the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee, Georgia Department of Labor’s Cairo Career Center, and Grady County Farm Bureau recently held an appreciation breakfast to honor Grady County Farmers.
“It’s a hard job, and we want you to know how much we value you,” Employer Committee Chairperson, Marilyn Dollar told the farmers who attended.
UNEXPECTED HONOR
With the success of the recent Veterans Express, Inc. Golf Classic in May, an unexpected honor was presented to the organizers of the tournament. Along with a World War II, Korean and Vietnam Veteran, Mr. Ben Celaya, Ms. Evelyn Bishop, who has been the Treasurer since the beginning of the Veterans Express Bus, presented a plaque of appreciation to tournament organizers, Fred McCallum and Debra Hancock, representing the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee. ![]()
2011 CAREER AND RESOURCE EXPO A HUGE SUCCESS
The 2011 Career and Resource Expo was the event of the year for South Georgians looking for employment and resources.
For the 3rdnd year in a row, two neighboring counties collaborated and hosted a successful Career and Resource Expo. Cairo (Grady County) and Thomasville (Thomas County) partnered to bring hiring employers and resource vendors to this area.![]()
Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee 13 Annual Golf Tournament – A Huge Success
For 13 years, Fred McCallum, tournament organizer, has collaborated with the Georgia Department of Labor Employer Committee to put on a golf tournament for the benefit of the Veterans, and this year was no exception.
This year’s golf tournament was sponsored by Stallings Motors, Inc. of Cairo and dedicated to the late Mr. Bill Bishop who was a co-founder of the Veterans Express Bus. ![]()
Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee Host UI Seminar
Employers were eagerly waiting for this year’s Unemployment Seminar hosted by the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee. The guest speaker was Cherry Rizer, Employment and Training Consultant with the Georgia Department of Labor and Kathy Lundy, UI Tax Field Auditor, also with the Georgia Department of Labor. ![]()
2011 GROUNDHOG JOB SHADOW DAY MAKES ANOTHER APPEARANCE
Cairo High School “shadow” students had an opportunity to meet and shadow area employers in areas of employment that they have an interest in and would possibly like to make a career of that profession. The students, there were 19 students from the high school and 14 businesses in Cairo that participated in this year’s Job Shadow Day. ![]()
Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee and Thomas County Employer Committee Host Fall Job Fair
September 23, 2010 marked a very successful day for the job seekers of Cairo and Thomasville. The employer committees of both Cairo and Thomasville along with Georgia Department of Labor Career Center staff sponsored a fall job fair at the Thomasville Career Center. ![]()

Tony Ward and Peter Wright and Emma Fortner from the Grady County Housing Task Force, gave a presentation on “The Homeless Count”.
This week in Grady County, a week long survey is being conducted to count our homeless population. Every community includes people who are facing housing crisis. The people that are homeless in our community can fall into any of the below listed categories: ![]()
