In The Trenches “Boot Camp” for HR Leaders

The Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee sponsored a seminar for area employers on July 8, 2008 in Cairo at the Grady Room of the Roddenbery Memorial Library.

Eighteen companies were represented at this seminar which started off with a fabulous continental breakfast catered by local caterer Carol Oates.

JAM FEST 2008 A Big SUCCESS

Bringing a following with them, each band at the Jam Fest 2008 played their best. The Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee, IAWP Members along with The Grady County Children & Youth Council, S&L Productions, Flowers by Theresa, Cairo High School and the Cairo High School Grady County Youth Council sponsored JAM FEST 2008 at the Cairo High School Gym on March 15, 2008.

FERST FOUNDATION SPELLING BEE

Although it was the 2nd Annual Spelling Bee for “Ferst Foundation”, it was the First for the Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee Team. With butterflies in our stomachs, Employer Committee Members, Marilyn Dollar, Debra Hancock and Joyce Hancock entered the arena with 11 other teams.

Grady County Moves to Tier 2 County

Rick McCaskill – Executive Director, Cairo/Grady County Chamber of Commerce. Mr. McCaskill shared interesting facts about Cairo and feels overall, Cairo is very healthy, despite what we read and hear in the news.

FERST FOUNDATION FOR CHILDHOOD LITERACY

Cairo/Grady Employer Committee have entered the 2nd Annual "Spelling Bee" contest with a sponsorship of $250 to help raise money for this project.  Committee Members, Marilyn Dollar, Debra Hancock and Joyce Hancock will compete against other teams in the spelling bee.

2007 GRADY COUNTY JOB FAIR FILLS THE HOUSE

With a room filled, even the stormy skies couldn’t keep ‘em away. That was the picture of the 2007 Grady County Job Fair in Cairo on October 18, 2007. Thirty-Two employers and over 250 job seekers attended the job fair in hopes of making the perfect match. Employers set their booths with attractive sites and company representatives pitched a sale to potential employees.

CG Balloon Release A Success

The Cairo/Grady County Employer Committee along with the Grady County Health Department joined forces October 9, 2007 to pay tribute and recognition to people whose lives have been touched by Breast Cancer or disabilities from serving our country.

Janice Bishop honored as SWGA Older Worker of the Year

Janice Bishop, 68, selected as Older Worker of the Year for Southwest Georgia. Ashley Hindsman ALBANY — Two years ago Janice Bishop, 68, took a job at the Cairo Career Center doing clerical work she had never done before. Shortly before then she received her GED, but said she was totally computer illiterate. Knowing she had to provide for her disabled husband and take care of her household bills, Bishop was determined to learn all she needed to know to complete her job. Her determination paid off this year when she was named Older Worker of the Year for Southwest Georgia by Georgia’s Older Worker Network.

 

Veterans Express Bus Golf Tourney Fundraiser a BIG Success

On September 8, 2007 the Cairo and Thomas County Employer Committee joined forces to help sponsor a golf tournament to raise money for the Veterans Express. Over $3,500 was raised. Other organizers were Golf Pro and veterans, Ben Celaya, Veteran Fred McCallum and Larry Price, Thomas County Veterans Council.

 

Cairo Career Center selected as Older Worker Employer of the Year

A local agency believes people with graying hair, wrinkled skin and many years of life still have a lot to contribute to the Grady County workforce. The Cairo Career Center, 101 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., was recently selected as Georgia’s “Outstanding Employer of Older Workers” for 2007 by the Georgia Older Workers Network. An employee there, Janice Bishop, was named “older worker of the year” for the southwest Georgia region, though she did not pick up top honors at the state level.

2007 Groundhog Job Shadow Day

“Just as the legendary groundhog spots its own shadow, employers across the nation spot theirs on Groundhog Job Shadow Day. This time, however, the “shadow” will be a junior or senior student from the community. Job shadowing allows students the hands-on experience to help them gain a better understanding of the link between academics and world of work.”
