AN INTERVIEW WITH
LORVINA COOKE
The Georgia Employer Committee would like to share with its viewers the EMR's who are vital to the success of the Local Committees throughout the State. This month we meet and talk with Lorvina Cooke of the Carrollton Career Center.
Tell us your name, your Career Center and how long you’ve been an EMR?
LC: - My name is Lorvina Cooke and I am the Employment Marketing Representative at the Carrollton One Stop Career Center. I have only been in this position for one year.
Do you have any special talents, hobbies or interests you’d like to share?
LC: - I am very involved with my church as the Minister of Collegiate Education, dean of our local college, a harpist and financial secretary. I also am a Global Career Development Facilitator, Certified Résumé Writer and hold a real estate license.
What led you to your position as an EMR and why?
LC: - Of all of the positions in the career center, the EMR seems the most intriguing to me. This position allows interaction with both employers & job seekers, and the opportunity to educate the community as whole of all the wonderful services that are offered at the Department of Labor free of charge.
How active is your Employer Committee? What do you feel are its best features and biggest challenges?
LC: - We have a wonderfully active Employer Committee which averages about 30 to 35 in attendance each month. I very luckily inherited a Committee that grew from three people into this vibrant and committed group and have been trying hard ever since to keep the momentum going! I feel our greatest strength is in our commitment to service and our focus on projects that will serve business, industry and education in our area.
The two major projects we sponsor each year are the Spirit Awards (which is an event to honor top employees in different company categories) and Interview Days (every high school junior is interviewed and critiqued by employers, another component was added this year to include presentations on interviewing techniques, applications, and resumes). Both events are well supported and received by the entire community.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
LC: - I enjoy the variety this position brings most. Everyday is challenging and fulfilling because I’m learning and doing new and exciting things and assisting others in making their dreams come to fruition.
