An interview with
Mae Brown
The Georgia Employer Committee would like to share with its viewers the EMR's who are vital to the success of the Local Committees throughout the State. This month we meet and talk with Mae Brown of the Habersham Career Center.
Tell us your name, your Career Center and how long you’ve been an EMR?
MB: - Mae Brown/Habersham Career Center – Tallulah Area Employer Committee.
Do you have any special talents, hobbies, or interest you’d like to share? ?
MB: - I enjoy my family—my parents who both turned 80 this year and specifically my two grandsons Dallas, age 4 and Blake age 1. Very involved in church where I’ve been the musician for all the choirs for a very long time and also choir director. Work with all age groups from youth to Seniors and am usually someone that gets selected for a committee of some sort. Warming up to NASCAR—my husband is a huge fan and we visit the track if we’re within the vicinity of one.
What led you to your position as an EMR, and why?
MB: - Having been in the HR realm and on the other side of the desk, I know how important it is to assist Employers in finding candidates for their openings. It gives me the opportunity to not only assist Employers but the community as well in the economy that we’re now experiencing.
What do you feel is unique about the area in which you work?
MB: - Habersham and Rabun counties are located in the beautiful Northeast Georgia mountains which is unique in itself—being the in the ‘corner’. The area has a diverse mixture of businesses and organizations from the ‘hospitality’ industry due to travel and tourism to service and manufacturing. We find people relocating to this area for the beauty of the area but also for various work opportunities as well.
How active is your Employer Committee? What do you feel are its best features, and biggest challenges?
MB: - The Tallulah Area Employer Committee is small in number compared to other committees in the state but we make things happen. The Committee annually sponsors Scholarships awarded to area high school seniors and assists families in need during the winter season with a coat drive. The Committee members also participate and assist with numerous community projects such as blood drives and job fairs.Have you, or your Employer Committee, received any awards, or special recognition?
MB: - Received the District 2 ‘Team Player Award’ in 2007.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
MB: - I enjoy getting to know new businesses and of course existing businesses that still are not aware of the services that we offer and information that is available to them.
In the future what would you most like to accomplish as an EMR?
MB:- You’ll be surprised at the number of business customers as well as jobseekers and the general public that aren’t aware of the services and resources we have to offer them. By contacting new businesses and staying in touch with existing businesses, we want them to know the Department of Labor is here to assist. Would like to alleviate the stigma of being the ‘Un’employment office. What future trends do you see in employment needs for your area?
MB: - Employment trends are leaning toward workers that are educated and trained. We’re always promoting the Georgia Work Ready program to not only Customers but Employers as well. This would be instrumental in decreasing turnover and increasing productivity for businesses and Employers now and in the future.Mae Brown
